The 'M' check is a simple but effective way to systematically check all key parts of the bike, moving in a path that resembles the shape of an 'M'. Here’s how to do it: 1. Check Stability
Start at the front of the bike, and give the handlebars a jiggle; is the bike stable on the floor, or does it rock? This is the first issue we need to sort out. 2. Handlebars Start at the top of the bike. Check that the handlebars are smoothly adjustable (forwards and backwards as well as up and down) and can be securely fastened so they won’t move during the session. 3. Pedals, flywheel, brakes and resistance Get the pedals moving smoothly with minimal resistance (keeping yourself out of the way of the pedals if you’re not in the saddle). Once you have some momentum, listen for interference with the flywheel – it should move freely. Add some resistance, and check that the flywheel slows down as the resistance bites. Then apply the brake to stop the pedals/flywheel completely. Now check the pedals themselves that straps and toe cages are intact, that the pedal has no play and that they move freely. 4. Saddle and seat post Check the saddle adjustment as you did for the handlebars – both forwards and backwards as well as up and down. Check that the saddle is level and not pointing up or down. Check around the saddle that there is nothing that riders’ clothing could catch on. 5. Frame and stability Finish by checking the overall stability of the bike again, by giving the saddle a jiggle and checking for rocking. And you’re done!
