How Long Does It Take to Become an Indoor Cycling Instructor?

How Long Does It Take to Become an Indoor Cycling Instructor?

One of the most common questions we're asked at the Indoor Cycling Institute is:
'How long does it take to become an indoor cycling instructor?'
The answer depends on which learning route you choose.
Whether you prefer to study at home in your own time or immerse yourself in an intensive practical training day, we offer two ways to qualify:
  • Online Indoor Cycling Instructor Course - study at your own pace.
  • Indoor Cycling Instructor Masterclass - complete your pre-course learning at home before attending an intensive practical training and assessment day.
Both routes lead to the same qualification. The difference is how you learn.

Option 1: Online Indoor Cycling Instructor Course

Our online course is ideal if you need flexibility.
You can study whenever it suits you, fitting your learning around work, family and existing teaching commitments. There are no classroom dates. Simply work through the course, complete your assessments and submit them when you're ready. You can take as long as six months to finish if you want to.
Our tutors aim to return all assessments within two working days, helping to keep your progress moving.

What's the quickest anyone has completed it?

The fastest learner we've ever had completed the entire qualification in just five days.
He didn't rush. Instead, he worked steadily and thoroughly, followed the Tutor Tips throughout the course and submitted high-quality work to pass the theory assessment, session plan and practical first time.
Five days is certainly not typical, but it demonstrates what is possible if you have decided to focus on getting certified quickly.
Most learners complete the qualification over several weeks while balancing work and other commitments.
The quickest way to complete the course is to pass each assessment first time. Over the years we've found that learners who need to resubmit almost always make the same small number of avoidable mistakes. That's why we've included Tutor Tips throughout the course, highlighting areas that are commonly misunderstood so you can avoid these pitfalls and keep progressing. The most common areas for mistakes are:
  • incomplete bike setup - we need to see that you know how to adjust all four points
  • session planning - you need to build your session around an aim. If there's no aim, or the session plan ignores the aim, it can't pass
  • we also need to see that you can effectively employ the principles of intensity and cadence in your plan and instruct it effectively in your practical
  • incorrect sprinting - this is commonly misunderstood to be fast cadence and light resistance. It's actually the opposite, and we need to see that you can instruct this safely and effectively.

Option 2: Indoor Cycling Instructor Masterclass

If you prefer face-to-face learning, our Masterclass offers a much faster route.
Before attending, you'll complete the online pre-course learning at home. This is the first assessment, and has to be completed for you to attend the course day. It gives you the knowledge you need before arriving, allowing the practical day to focus on applying and building on what you've learned.
During the course you'll:
  • Review key theory with your tutor.
  • Practise bike setup, coaching and riding technique.
  • Learn effective class planning.
  • Receive feedback throughout the day.
  • Complete your session plan assessment.
  • Complete your bike setup assessment.
  • Deliver your practical assessment.
All assessments take place on the course date itself.

Which Route Is Faster?

If you're looking purely at calendar time, the Masterclass is usually the quickest route because your learning and assessments are concentrated into one intensive training course after you've completed the pre-course learning.
If you need flexibility, the online course allows you to progress entirely at your own pace. Some learners complete it in a matter of days, while others spread their learning over several weeks or months.

Does Previous Experience Make a Difference?

Sometimes, but not always. What often has a bigger influence is the quality of the classes you've attended as a rider.
If you've been fortunate enough to ride with knowledgeable instructors who prioritise safe, effective coaching, you'll probably recognise many of the concepts we teach.
Historically, indoor cycling has lacked a universally recognised standard for instructor training, so it's common for riders to have experienced coaching techniques that are outdated, ineffective or simply copied from someone else without understanding the reasoning behind them.
It's something we see regularly. Many learners tell us they've recognised practices from classes they've attended that are highlighted in the course as examples of poor practice or common mistakes. Don't worry if that's the case for you. That's exactly why the course exists.
Rather than asking you to copy a particular coaching style, we explain the science and reasoning behind good practice. Once you understand why something works, you're able to make informed coaching decisions instead of simply repeating what you've seen other instructors do.
Whether you're completely new to indoor cycling or have been attending classes for years, the goal is the same: to help you become a safe, knowledgeable and confident instructor who understands the principles behind every coaching decision.

Our Best Advice: Don't Skip the Tutor Tips

Whether you're studying online or attending a Masterclass, one piece of advice applies to everyone.
Pay attention to the Tutor Tips throughout the course.
These highlight the most common mistakes learners make and explain how to avoid them. Spending a few extra minutes reading them can make the difference between passing an assessment first time or needing to resubmit.

It's About More Than Getting a Certificate

We know many people want to get certified as quickly as possible - and there's nothing wrong with that.
However, our goal isn't simply to issue certificates. It's to create instructors who understand how to coach effectively, keep riders safe, and deliver enjoyable, effective sessions that people want to come back to week after week.
Whether you choose the flexibility of our online course or the intensity of a masterclass, you'll leave with far more than a certificate; you'll have the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to become a better indoor cycling instructor.
