How to Keep Your Indoor Cycling Classes Fun and Engaging

20/2/2025

Keeping your indoor cycling classes fun, engaging, and exciting is key to retaining riders and building a strong community. A great workout is important, but how you deliver it can make all the difference. If your classes feel repetitive or uninspiring, riders may lose motivation or stop attending altogether.
So, how do you keep your classes fresh and exciting while still delivering a solid workout? Here are some tried-and-tested strategies to ensure your riders leave every session feeling energised and eager to come back.
1. Vary Your Class Structure
No one wants to ride the same class over and over. Mixing up your workouts keeps things interesting and helps riders develop different skills. Try alternating between:
  • Endurance rides (steady efforts over longer periods)
  • Interval training (short bursts of high intensity with recovery)
  • Climbs and resistance challenges (hill simulations for strength)
  • Speed and power drills (fast cadence work to build explosiveness)
You can also change the order of class elements. Instead of always starting with a steady warm-up followed by sprints, try a surprise "fast start" challenge or a rolling hill warm-up to keep things dynamic.

2. Use Energising Music That Matches the Workout
Music is one of the most powerful tools for creating an engaging atmosphere. The right playlist can make even the toughest climb feel inspiring and push riders to work harder.
Tips for Creating an Engaging Playlist:✅ Match the tempo to the effort – Use faster BPM tracks for sprints and slower, powerful beats for climbs.
✅ Mix up genres – Not everyone loves EDM! Include rock, pop, hip-hop, and classics to cater to different tastes.
✅ Introduce themed music rides – A 90s throwback, movie soundtracks, or even a one-hit wonders ride can add novelty.
✅ Use music as a cue – Instead of always instructing, let the beat drop signal when to sprint or increase resistance.
Riders will appreciate a fresh, well-planned playlist that complements the workout. Bonus points if you take requests—people love hearing their favorite tracks!

3. Incorporate Fun Challenges and Games
Adding elements of competition or play can turn a regular workout into something riders look forward to. Some fun ideas include:
  • Sprint Battles – Divide the class into teams and have them compete in short sprints.
  • Mystery Intervals – Riders don’t know when the next high-intensity effort is coming!
  • "Beat the Instructor" Challenge – Let riders try to hold a certain power or cadence level longer than you.
  • Ride to the Rhythm – Challenge the class to stay perfectly on beat with the music for an entire song.
These small but effective tweaks can increase engagement, encourage teamwork, and make the class feel like a shared experience rather than just another workout.

4. Use Storytelling and Themed Rides
A great instructor doesn’t just coach—they take riders on a journey. Using storytelling techniques can immerse riders in the experience, making the class more than just a physical effort.
Ideas for Themed Rides:🔥 "Tour de France Stage" – Simulate an actual mountain stage with endurance climbs.
🎶 "Music Festival Ride" – A high-energy setlist that mimics a festival lineup.
🌍 "Travel the World" Ride – Each song represents a different country, with terrain to match.
🕺 "Decades Ride" – Move through the 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s with matching energy levels.
Even a simple shift in language can make a difference. Instead of saying, "increase resistance for a climb," say, "you're riding up the final stretch of an epic mountain—push to the summit!" This small change turns effort into adventure.

5. Keep Energy High with Interactive Coaching
Your energy as an instructor sets the tone for the entire class. If you’re monotone or uninspired, your riders will be too.
Ways to Keep Energy High:✔ Make eye contact – Connect with riders rather than staring at your bike’s console.
✔ Use names – Calling out individual riders (e.g., "Great sprint, Alex!") makes the class feel personal.
✔ Move off the bike – If possible, coach from the floor to interact with riders more directly.
✔ Vary your tone and volume – Build excitement by changing your pace, pitch, and intensity when speaking.
Engaging coaching makes riders feel like part of something bigger rather than just pedaling alone in a room.

6. Build a Strong Instructor-Rider Connection
People return to classes not just for the workout, but for the experience—and a big part of that is YOU. Making riders feel valued and included goes a long way in keeping them engaged.
Ways to Build Community in Your Classes:💬 Chat before and after class – Ask how their day was, not just how their ride was.
📢 Encourage interaction – Small talk, jokes, and lighthearted moments keep things fun.
📸 Create a social media presence – Share class updates, music playlists, or motivational content.
🏅 Celebrate milestones – If a rider hits their 50th class, acknowledge it!
Riders who feel connected to the instructor and the class are far more likely to stay loyal and keep coming back for more.

7. Keep Learning and Adapting
The best instructors are always evolving. If your classes feel stale, ask yourself:
  • What do riders respond to the most?
  • Which elements make them smile or push harder?
  • What could be improved to make classes even more fun?
Take feedback seriously, experiment with new formats, and never stop learning. Even small tweaks in your approach can make a huge difference in engagement and rider enjoyment.

Creating a Class That Riders Can’t Wait to Join
A fun and engaging class is one where riders feel challenged, connected, and inspired. Mix  up workouts, and use great music, incorporating challenges, and making real connections, and you’ll create a class experience that riders genuinely look forward to.
