What to Add to Your Gym Bag: Be Ready for Every Indoor Cycling Class

5/5/2025

A smooth, confident indoor cycling class starts long before the music kicks in — it starts with preparation. One of the simplest ways to stay on top of your game as an instructor or regular rider is to pack your gym bag with the right essentials. When you’re well-prepared, you can handle the unexpected, support your riders, and deliver high-quality sessions without breaking a sweat (except the good kind).
Here’s what to include in your gym bag so you’re ready for anything the studio might throw at you.

Picture
1. A Water Bottle (or Two)
Hydration is non-negotiable — not just for your riders, but for you as an instructor. A large, reusable water bottle should always be in your bag. And if you’ve got space, throw in a spare. Having an extra on hand for a rider who’s forgotten theirs is a simple, generous gesture that builds trust and shows leadership.

2. Cycling Shoes (Yes, if you can)
We mention this often because it matters. Proper cycling shoes are a huge help for instructors and committed riders. They offer better control, greater pedal efficiency, and improved comfort, especially when teaching multiple sessions a week. Trainers and toe cages can get you by, but if you're serious about performance, your shoes should be clipped in.

3. A Quick Energy Boost
If you’re teaching back-to-back classes, or even doing a particularly intense session, pack something that can quickly refuel your energy levels. A banana, handful of nuts, or a protein bar will do the trick. This helps maintain your focus, energy, and mood — all of which your riders will pick up on.

4. Tech Essentials and Problem-Solvers
You know how it goes — microphones fail, batteries run flat, playlists disappear. Technology isn’t always on your side, but being prepared can save a session. Keep a small tech kit in your bag that includes:
  • Spare mic windshields – hygienic and handy, especially in shared facilities
  • Battery pack and charging cable – don’t let your phone or Bluetooth devices die mid-class
  • Phone - for running Intelligent Cycling, connecting your heartrate monitor and/or power meter or cadence meter or for using intervals feature
  • Backup CD or playlist device – just in case your streaming app lets you down
  • Notebook – quickly jot down any bike faults or studio issues post-class
  • Cadence meter – attach this to bikes without consoles and connect to Intelligent Cycling or similar apps to cue zones accurately
  • Heartrate monitor - your own - very annoying to leave this behind if you're used to using one!
When you’re prepared, technical hiccups become manageable rather than stressful.

5. Anti-Fungal Shoe Spray
Cycling shoes don’t always get a chance to dry out between sessions, which makes them a breeding ground for bacteria and odours. A quick spray after each class helps maintain hygiene and extends the life of your kit. Your future self (and anyone near your locker) will thank you.

You can’t always predict what will happen during a session, but you can be ready for it. With these gym bag essentials, you’ll be equipped to handle tech mishaps, tired moments, and rider emergencies like a pro. Being prepared gives you confidence — and confidence allows you to deliver consistently excellent experiences for your riders.

Pack smart, plan ahead, and walk into every session ready to lead.
