At the Indoor Cycling Institute, we believe that becoming a qualified instructor is just the beginning of your professional journey. That’s why we’ve introduced a new recognition system designed to support, celebrate, and guide your ongoing development.
The Three-Star System
Every ICI instructor now follows a clear pathway of progression — with visible recognition at each stage:

One Star – Junior InstructorAwarded upon successful completion of the entry-level ICI Instructor Training Course. This shows you've achieved a solid foundation in delivering safe, effective, and engaging indoor cycling classes.

Two Stars – Affiliated InstructorAwarded to instructors who hold an active ICI membership. This status reflects a commitment to professional development and current best practice. Members have access to 50% discount on all ICI CPD courses and can work towards becoming an Endorsed Instructor. They can also earn ICI CPD points on non-course learning, such as seminar and event attendance, reflective practice, and producing articles and blog posts.

Three Stars – Endorsed InstructorAwarded to instructors who have completed the Endorsed Instructor Assessment and demonstrated consistently high standards in planning, delivery, communication, and safety.

Why It Matters
This system aims to give great instructors recognition, clarity, and appreciation for raising standards. You’ll always keep your qualification, but now you can:
- Show your progression to employers
- Stand out as a professional instructor
- Unlock exclusive opportunities via ICI.
CPD Points and Membership
- CPD points are valid for 12 months from the date of completion - expiry date is shown on your certificate.
- To maintain your ★★ or ★★★ status, you must meet the requirements. CPD points expire after a year.
- Your one-star Junior Instructor qualification does not expire
The Three-Star System
I qualified before and have no stars on my certificate — what does this mean for me?
You're still a fully qualified ICI instructor. From late 2025 onwards, certificates now reflect the ★ Junior Instructor status. You’re welcome to join as a member and begin working towards endorsement at any time. You will receive a certficate recognising your updated status and be able to present this with your entry-level certificate.
How do I become an Endorsed Instructor?
You’ll need to complete the endorsement assessment, show evidence of CPD, be a practising instructor, and make a declaration of your practice. More details are available [here].
Do I need to upgrade?
No — the star system is there to support you if you want to continue growing. Some instructors choose to stay at ★, but those who pursue ★★ or ★★★ will find it increases opportunities and credibility, and enjoy the extra status and recognition that these offer.
