About ICI

Indoor cycling is what we do

The Indoor Cycling Institute provides specialist indoor cycling training, development and professional support, from learning to instruct through to advanced practice.

One specialist subject
Built around indoor cycling.
TrainingInstructor training built for the demands of indoor cycling.

StandardsProfessional expectations for safe, effective practice.
SupportResources, membership and continued professional support.
Specialist by design
Indoor cycling training developed in depth, not treated as an add-on.

ICI was built around indoor cycling. It isn't one small course sitting inside a catalogue of unrelated fitness training.

That specialist focus lets us go beyond the minimum needed to get somebody started and look at how instructors plan, coach, develop and work professionally over time.

Initial certification is the starting point. Good instructors keep building their knowledge, judgement and practice afterwards.

Why ICI exists
We're working to improve the standard of indoor cycling.
Good indoor cycling shouldn't depend on being lucky enough to find a good instructor.

The quality of an indoor cycling session depends heavily on the knowledge, decisions and coaching of the person leading it.

ICI exists to help raise the standard of indoor cycling instruction, so riders are coached more safely, sessions are designed with a clear purpose, and training is more likely to deliver the results it is intended to produce.

Better instruction Give instructors the knowledge to make informed decisions rather than simply repeat what they've seen elsewhere.
Safer riders Promote appropriate setup, technique, intensity and coaching so unnecessary risk is reduced.
Better results Encourage purposeful session design so the work riders do is appropriate to the training aim.
Higher standards Keep developing expectations for good professional indoor cycling practice.
The ICI approach

What does specialist mean in practice?

It should mean more than having 'indoor cycling' in the company name.

Developed by ICI ICI courses are developed specifically for ICI. They are not off-the-shelf white-label courses sold elsewhere with a different logo.
Indoor cycling focus Our training, development and professional work is built specifically around indoor cycling instruction.
Understand the why We teach instructors to build sessions around a defined training aim and make deliberate choices about intensity, cadence, resistance, recovery and coaching, rather than filling the session with unrelated efforts.
Beyond entry level Initial certification is a starting point. CPD and specialist training provide a clear route for continued development.
Professional practice Development isn't only about completing courses. Experience, standards and continuing professional practice all contribute to better instruction.
Keep developing Training and resources continue to develop as evidence, equipment and indoor cycling practice change.
Professional structure

Beyond the training course

A certificate records a point in an instructor's development. ICI also provides ways to keep learning, stay connected, demonstrate professional practice and build experience after initial training.

Still developing

ICI keeps learning too

A specialist institute should keep learning about its own subject.

We continue to develop courses, resources and professional support as the evidence, equipment and practice around indoor cycling develop.

We also listen to instructors, studios and employers about the knowledge, support and training they need next.
