Indoor Cycling with Power

Use power with purpose

Power gives indoor cycling instructors an objective measure of rider output. Learn how to interpret it, set meaningful individual targets and use it to build sessions that support a clear training aim.

Professional recognition
Understanding power
Power gives you a clearer picture of the work a rider is producing.

Perceived effort, cadence and resistance all tell an instructor something about the ride. Power adds a measured output that can be used to set more individual targets and track change over time.

The useful part is not simply seeing a wattage on the display. It is knowing how to interpret that number in context and turn it into effective coaching.

Indoor Cycling with Power is designed to develop that understanding.

What power adds

More information. For more intelligent training.

Power data can make indoor cycling more individual and more measurable, but only when the instructor understands what the numbers mean and what to do with them.

01

Objective intensity

Use measured output alongside the rider's own perception of effort rather than relying on guesswork alone.

02

Individual targets

Give different riders meaningful targets within the same class rather than asking everybody to produce the same number.

03

Better session design

Connect the purpose of the session to appropriate intensity and training demands.

04

Measurable progress

Use repeatable information to help riders understand changes in their performance over time.

Course content

What you'll learn

The course moves from understanding what power actually measures through to using it in practical indoor cycling coaching and session design.

01 Power fundamentals Understand watts, power output and what the number on the bike is actually telling you.
02 Power, cadence and resistance Understand how the different variables interact and why the same wattage can be produced in different ways.
03 Individualising intensity Use individual information rather than treating one wattage target as appropriate for an entire class.
04 Thresholds and zones Understand how power-based training zones can be used to structure and communicate intensity.
05 Coaching with power Turn data into instructions riders can understand and act upon during a class.
06 Session design Build sessions in which the power targets support the training aim rather than becoming the aim themselves.
From numbers to coaching

Power is individual

The same power output can represent a very different training demand for two different riders.

Useful power coaching starts by establishing meaningful individual reference points, then using them to set and communicate the right intensity for the session aim.

The data should make the coaching more precise, while the class still feels like a well-coached indoor cycling session.

Who it's for

For instructors ready to use power well

You do not need to teach every ride by watts. This course is for instructors who want the confidence to use power when it adds value, explain it clearly and build more individualised sessions.

Indoor cycling instructors teaching on power-enabled bikes
Instructors moving into studios where power data is available
Experienced instructors who want to deepen their training knowledge
Instructors interested in more individualised and measurable coaching
The ICI approach

Use the data to improve the coaching

Power can give instructors and riders a clearer picture of what is happening during a session.

Used well, it can make targets more individual, coaching decisions better informed and progress easier to understand.

Rider context

Interpret the number in relation to the individual rather than treating it as a universal target.

Training aim

Start with what the session is trying to achieve, then use power to support the right intensity and training demand.

Clear coaching

Translate technical information into cues and targets that riders can understand and use.

Better-informed riders

Help riders understand their own output and progress so they can make better training choices and choose classes that support their goals.

Two ways to train

Choose online or in person

Indoor Cycling with Power is available as an online course and as face-to-face training. Both routes cover the same core power coaching principles and are offered at the same price.

The online course is available to start at any time. In-person delivery is scheduled according to demand and venue availability, so please check with ICI for current dates.

In-person courses run at selected times of year, subject to sufficient demand. Check the course page for scheduled dates. If no date is available, contact ICI to register your interest.
